For home customers, the subsidy is often the deciding factor, and slow paperwork is the most common complaint after installation. Treat every subsidy case like a mini-project with clear stages and an owner.
Scheme rules, amounts and portal steps change from time to time. Always check the current guidelines on the official national portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) and with your DISCOM before you promise a figure or a date.
The amounts (as per the scheme guidelines at launch)
For residential rooftop solar, the central financial assistance was announced as:
| System size | Subsidy |
|---|---|
| Up to 2 kW | ₹30,000 per kW |
| Third kW | ₹18,000 |
| Above 3 kW | Capped at ₹78,000 |
Higher amounts apply in special category states (North-East, hill states, islands), and housing societies/RWAs get assistance for common facilities. Some states add their own top-up.
The stages to track
- Registration: the consumer registers on the national portal with their electricity consumer number.
- Application: apply for rooftop solar and choose a registered vendor (you).
- Feasibility approval: the DISCOM checks the connection and approves.
- Installation: install with approved components (ALMM-listed modules where required).
- Net metering application: submit the installation details for net metering.
- DISCOM inspection: the DISCOM inspects and installs the net meter.
- Commissioning certificate: generated on the portal after inspection.
- Bank details: the consumer submits bank details and a cancelled cheque on the portal.
- Subsidy credited: paid directly into the customer's bank account.
Make one person own it
- Record the application number and consumer number on the installation.
- Keep a status for subsidy (Not applied → Applied → Inspection done → Approved → Credited) and for the net meter (Not applied → Applied → Installed).
- Add a follow-up task for every stage, with a date.
- Tell the customer what is happening before they ask.
Let the customer see it themselves
In Nithyam, every installation has subsidy and net-meter status fields, the PM Surya Ghar application number and the inspection date. You can share a tracking link on WhatsApp: the customer sees installation progress, subsidy and net-meter status and their warranties on one page, without calling your office.
